the middle stone was probably early 1700s – i don’t have a full photo of the inscription, so until i can find one, i will just assume a slightly later date than the more crude winged death’s heads that were common in the late 1600s. the Puritans tended to be more grotesque (in the best sense), decorating their gravestones with clear reminders of death for the viewer – skeletons, winged skulls, etc. it is sad, really, that this went so quickly out of favor….
