Last spring, a close friend expressed growing stress and anxiety over an undertaking yet to come. I asked her to write her stress and anxiety on a small, white card and sign it. I put the card in my wallet. A few weeks later, at semester’s end, I drove to the Sun Tunnels in northwestern Utah. I buried the card there. My friend completed her undertaking brilliantly.

Nancy Holt’s masterpiece …
Holt created and placed the Sun Tunnels, near the deserted hamlet of Lucin, Utah, in 1976. She and her husband were progenitors of the land art (sometimes called earth art) movement in the ’70s. For more, see my explainer from last year’s visit.

The Sun Tunnels (their history and my first visit here) are so … well, elemental. They stand as remarkable contrasts to a remarkable landscape, the northwesternmost reaches of the bed of Glacial Lake Bonneville. I need to go back as often as I can before I pass on.
