Hat full of words,
words like the ember-lit
belly of a Samhain sky
whistling with owl feathers.
A voice, dry as skeletons,
scrapes between worlds.
High road or low road: choose.
So I do,
each word a trillion trillion first steps.

Fountain, Reynolda Gardens, Winston-Salem, NC
I have said a time or two in this series that Reynolda Gardens is one of my favorite places on Earth. But this, specifically – the little fountain at the heart of the gardens. When I was young, starting when I was a student at Wake Forest (which is adjacent to the gardens), this was my favorite place to take dates after dark. It was so unspeakably beautiful and tranquil…perhaps the most romantic spot I know. It was wonderful to be able to sit by it for a few minutes on my recent trip back, and to capture with my camera the thing I could never articulate with words.
