    • Yes. When Hurricane Irene hit my home county in western Massachusetts, the damage in the narrow valley occupied by the Deerfield River was considerable. The floodwaters ripped out large swaths of Route 2, which parallels the river. But it also “freshened” the riverbed. The gneisses and schists are really colorful and lie just beneath the water surface. So it didn’t take much saturation to pull out those colors.

      I shot these from a new rest area. The old one was ripped out by Irene.
