  1. My ability to use Peterson’s field guide to insects to actually identify an insect is marginal at best …

    • Funny, I just read up on this a couple days ago. As I recall (it was two days ago, afterall), your bee has a solidly connected body, with hair. Your wasp has a very slender extended connection of the abdomen to the thorax and has no hair, so the bottom one cannot be a wasp. The three parts of the hornets and yellowjackets are solidly connected as the bees are, but they have no hair, so this bottom creature cannot be a wasp.
      It would appear to be a bee. Which kind, though, is up for grabs. Or maybe it’s best that you don’t.
