You are 100 percent correct. It’s the bottom one. However, I like the top one. On some b&w images, using the monochrome sliders in Camera Raw are more useful. The interior of the lily (yellow in color) can be darkened with the yellow and orange sliders.
I have never played with Solver Efex, so I can’t really guess about that part. But I really like the depth of both images. Denny goes goth – who knew?

I like the top one also. The edges of the flower on the bottom one give it away as being manipulated.
Please, don’t say “manipulated” … say “artfully enhanced by the artist …”
